About the Opera.
Premiered in 1851 at La Fenice, Rigoletto (libretto by Francesco Maria Piave after Victor Hugo) traces the tragic arc of the jester Rigoletto, whose taunts and a father’s curse lead to the seduction and death of his daughter, Gilda. A taut, fast-moving drama, it’s famed for the Duke’s aria “La donna è mobile,” the Act III quartet, and Verdi’s darkly atmospheric writing.
