About the Opera.
Premiered at La Scala in 1829, Bellini’s La straniera is a quintessential bel canto drama set in medieval Brittany.
The mysterious Alaide (the “stranger”) hides a turbulent past while caught in a web of love and political intrigue involving
Arturo, his betrothed Isoletta, and Alaide’s protector Valdeburgo. Bellini’s long-spun melodic lines and atmospheric
choruses give the work its distinctive, moody color.
