About the Opera.
Premiered at the Metropolitan Opera in 1910, Puccini’s La fanciulla del West blends sweeping orchestral color
with verismo drama, set amid California’s Gold Rush. The triangle of Minnie, the sheriff Jack Rance, and outlaw Dick Johnson
plays out in the Polka saloon, a miners’ camp and Minnie’s cabin, culminating in an unconventional “happy” ending.

Teatro Regio di Torino revived the work in early 2004 in a staging by Giancarlo Del Monaco, conducted by
Steven Mercurio. Baritone Piero Terranova performed Sonora, with
Paoletta Marrocu (Minnie), Lucio Gallo (Jack Rance), and Ian Storey / Gabriel Sadé (Dick Johnson).
