La Scala’s 2007–08 season unveiled a new Maria Stuarda by Pier Luigi Pizzi
(who also designed sets and costumes), conducted by Antonino Fogliani.
The production, filmed in January 2008 and subsequently released on DVD,
featured Mariella Devia as Maria Stuarda opposite Anna Caterina Antonacci as Elisabetta;
alternations across the run included Irina Lungu (Maria) and Maria Pia Piscitelli (Elisabetta).
Francesco Meli sang Leicester, with Simone Alberghini and Carlo Cigni sharing Talbot,
Paola Gardina as Anna, and baritone Piero Terranova as Lord Guglielmo Cecil.
