About the Opera.
Madama Butterfly (1904) is Puccini’s tragedy of love and cultural collision, set in Nagasaki at the turn of the century.
The libretto by Luigi Illica and Giuseppe Giacosa adapts John Luther Long’s story (via David Belasco’s play),
blending Italian lyricism with pentatonic color and intimate orchestration to chart Cio-Cio-San’s fate.
